MapInfo SQL (Structured Query Language) for Data Analysis Course
Course Description
This course concentrates on MapInfo Structured Query Language (SQL) through a series of basic to complex exercises, involving both spatial and attribute data. Table updating procedures, used in conjunction with SQL statements will also be investigated.

Course Objectives
- Discuss database concepts and data structures
- Introduce SQL basics; character versus numerical queries
- Compare both MapInfo’s Select and SQL Select dialog boxes
- Utilize AND / OR operators and investigate MapInfo precedence
- Work with both spatial and attribute queries to leverage the full power of MapInfo
- GIS Investigate “Group By” and double “Group By” examples
- Utilize Table > Update Column functions
- Examine various string functions such as Left$(), Mid$(), Right$() and InStr()
- Complete an exercise utilizing a one-to-many join
- Use buffers to select certain objects from a point table
- Register a raster image to known vector data
- Join assay data to a table of sample points, and prevent possible problems
Prerequisites: A working knowledge of MapInfo
Optional Pre-course Skills: Some exposure to SQL in other software packages.
