Course Description

This course introduces basic MapInfo and Discover concepts. By the end of the two-day course, attendees will be able to perform basic MapInfo functions such as working with tables and workspaces, create new tables, digitize data, register raster imagery, import data from other sources, perform thematic analysis and create scaled outputs.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss GIS data types and layering concept
  • Configure MapInfo and Discover
  • Examine the Main toolpad in detail
  • Investigate selection methods – both spatial and attribute-based
  • Work with Discover’s Layer Control and review spatial data entry procedures
  • Discuss and work with MapInfo and Discover-created labels
  •  Review and discuss projections
  • Work through both attribute and spatial data import and translation
  • Investigate Discover’s Scaled Output module
  • Create a legend using Discover
  • Work through several exercises in thematic mapping
  • Complete a review exercise that ties together all concepts learned during the course
  • Discuss GIS data types and layering concept

Prerequisites:  None

Optional Pre-course Skills:  Familiarity with geologic concepts and basic computer skills.
