Course Description
This course introduces basic ArcGIS concepts. By the end of the two-day course, attendees will be able to perform basic ArcGIS functions such as working with Shapefiles and Geodatabases, performing graphical and attribute selections, digitize data, register raster imagery, import data from other sources, perform thematic analysis, and create a layout for hardcopy output.

Course Objectives
- Discuss GIS data types and layering concept
- Discuss ArcGIS data types
- Discuss the ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolBox interface
- Examine the Tools buttonpad in detail
- Work with the Table of Contents
- Investigate selection methods – both spatial and attribute-based
- Digitise and editing in ArcMap
- Labels versus Annotation
- Review and discuss projections
- Attribute and spatial data import from external sources
- Plotting from ArcMap, layer files and legends
- Work through several exercises in thematic mapping
- Raster registration
- Complete a review exercise that ties together all concepts learned during the course
